Dasha defeated the reigning champion of the Australian Open and the World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark in the quarterfinal of the Premier tournament in Saint-Petersburg: 7-6(2) 6-3.
Both players won two games on the opponent’s serve in the opening set. Moreover, Dasha failed to serve for the set upon the 6-5 score. However, Daria played more confidently during the tie-break losing only two rallies. At the very beginning of the second set, Dasha won another game on her opponent’s serve and strengthened her positions with a 3-0 lead. Wozniacki had almost neutralized the lead but that was her maximum for today. Dasha saved a break-point in the ninth game and eventually sealed the victory with the first match point.
“It was a difficult match which eventually had a tie-break in the opening set. The second set was also tight. It is difficult to play against Caroline as she always runs for all the balls and likes long rallies. I am really pleased that I managed to win”, said Dasha after the match.
Dasha has already defeated the World No. 1 before. Last year she managed to get a victory over Angelique Kerber in Sydney. Dasha’s last opponent on the way to the final is the French Kristina Mladenovic, the reigning champion of the Premier tournament in Saint-Petersburg and World No. 10.
